No stairs fit my measurements – what can I do?

With Minka attic stairs, there are some models that are manufactured individually on request. For these, you can freely select the dimensions of the ceiling opening within certain frame sizes.

Our system staircases are only available in certain sizes and shapes because they are constructed in a modular system. However, they can often be adjusted in height or supplemented with a height extension – you will find more detailed information on this in our technical data sheets and installation instructions.

If none of our staircases fit your room situation, the only option is a custom-made staircase. Beautiful and individual custom-made staircases are available, for example, at https://www.newlivingscale.com/!

What is a U-value and how high should it be?

The U-value or U-factor indicates how much energy or heat passes through a material when there are different temperatures on both sides. The U-value is given with the unit W/m2K (watts per square metre and Kelvin).

The lower it is, the better the insulating performance of a material. Thanks to years of experience in the field of loft ladders, Minka is an expert in high-quality insulation technology. The U-values of our products range between 0.1 and 1.3 W/m2K. With the matching ISO top cover, the values can be reduced even further.

What dimensions do I need when planning my staircase?
Dimensions for stairs

In order to be able to select a suitable staircase, the following dimensions are particularly relevant:

  • Basic dimensions (A): The space available for your staircase is a decisive factor in determining which models are suitable. It is best to measure the length and width of the space available for the stairs on the floor of the room. Using the floor plan of the room can help here.
  • Dimensions of the ceiling opening (B): The diameter of spiral staircases, the width of space-saving staircases and the dimensions of the hatch box for loft staircases must be chosen to match the ceiling opening. Therefore, be sure to measure the length and width of your ceiling opening before purchasing your staircase. For system staircases, please note that the ceiling opening must be 10 cm larger than the dimensions of the staircase. For example, a spiral staircase with a diameter of 140 cm requires a ceiling opening with a length and width of 150 cm.
  • Room height: The room height is also an important parameter for planning a staircase. Here a distinction must be made between two dimensions:
    • Storey height (C): The floor height is measured from the top edge of the floor to the top edge of the ceiling or gallery. It is the determining factor for the choice of system staircases.
    • Clear room height (D): For loft ladders, on the other hand, the clear room height is the essential parameter. It is measured from the upper edge of the floor to the lower edge of the ceiling.
  • Ceiling thickness (E): The ceiling thickness is also particularly relevant for the installation of attic stairs. To find it out, simply measure from the lower edge of the ceiling to the upper edge of the ceiling.
  • Fold-out space (F): It should be noted that attic stairs usually require a certain amount of space to fold out. This area exceeding the basic dimension is called the fold-out space.
What is the best way to plan my staircase?

Basically, three points are crucial when planning your staircase. First, you need to know the general conditions – you need to know where you want your stairs to be and what you want to use them for.

Based on this, you can either decide on a type of stair right away or measure the available space first. These two steps go hand in hand, as the stairs must meet your design requirements and at the same time fit into the available space.

Once you have taken the measurements and decided on the type of staircase, you can start looking for a suitable model. Minka offers a wide range of spiral staircases, space-saving staircases, outdoor staircases and attic staircases – feel free to search for our models online or ask for Minka products in a hardware store near you.

What types of stairs are there?

Minka offers different types of stairs. Generally, a distinction is made between system staircases and attic staircases. System staircases include, for example, our spiral staircases, space-saving staircases and outdoor staircases. The loft stairs differ mainly in material and construction. Here is an overview of the most important features of the various stairs:

  • Spiral staircases: Minka’s product range includes numerous spiral staircases made of wood and metal. Spiral staircases have a so-called spindle in the middle, to which the steps are fixed. The railing is mounted on the outside of the steps.
  • Space-saving staircases: Space-saving staircases are usually used where there is little space available to climb to the next floor. Depending on the model, they can be installed straight, slightly turned or quarter-winded.
  • Outdoor stairs: Only stairs that are explicitly marked as outdoor stairs are suitable for outdoor use. On these models, the steps and railing are galvanised, which makes the materials extremely resistant to environmental influences. Minka has both straight staircases and spiral staircases for outdoor use in its range.
  • Attic stairs: Attic stairs or loft ladders are stairs that are not used all the time and can therefore be folded away after use. They are particularly suitable for climbing up unoccupied rooms such as the attic. Minka offers different types of attic stairs: On the one hand, a distinction must be made between wooden and metal stairs. A special form of metal stairs are so-called scissor stairs. They open via so-called scissors and are easy to pull apart.
  • Flat roof stairs: To climb houses with flat roofs, stairs with a special flat roof exit are needed. The top cover is made of galvanised metal so that the exit is protected from wind and weather.
